Same struggle, different day. It feels like you can never really reach a resolution—or, when you do, there isn’t the follow-through necessary to actually notice a change in your relationship. frequently asked questions:

Our first session will take place with both partners present, where we’ll discuss topics like your relationship history and your goals for treatment. Then, I’ll meet with each partner individually. The purpose of these 1:1 sessions is to help me gain a better understanding of your unique history, experiences, and perspective on the relationship.

Next, we’ll come back together and begin meeting regularly to work toward the goals we set. Nothing is off-limits in our sessions: this is a nonjudgmental space where you can communicate freely with your partner and receive guidance and support as you work together to improve communication and connection.

Every relationship is different, and there’s no way to guarantee therapy will resolve all of the challenges you’re experiencing (as much as I wish there were!). However, therapy can be a very powerful catalyst in restoring connection, improving communication, and providing a space where both partners feel seen and heard.

Couples therapy is most effective when:

  • Both partners are invested. It’s perfectly fine if you feel a bit of apprehension or uncertainty about therapy—this is normal. But both parties need to be open to the process.
  • You’re willing to take action. We can talk about making changes all day long, but unless those strategies are implemented in day-to-day life, you won’t experience the change you’re looking for. I may assign individual exercises or couples communication homework between sessions and will check in with you about how it went.

Yes! In addition to being a couples therapist, I am also a certified sex therapist. Click here to learn more about sex therapy and how we can incorporate this into our work together.

It is. In fact, many of my clients appreciate the ability to be in a familiar space during our sessions. Studies have shown that online therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions in treating a wide range of concerns, and many couples find it useful if one or both partners travels often. As long as you’re both present in Illinois or a PSYPACT-eligible state, we can meet as usual. Click here to learn more about online therapy.

Absolutely. While couples therapy is a powerful tool, working 1:1 with a therapist can also be incredibly useful in improving how you show up in your relationships. This includes the boundaries you set, the way you react to your partner, and the decisions you make about the future. Click here to learn more about my work with individuals.
